Sleeping pills may increase the chances of death
A large study has shown that commonly used sleeping pills prescribed for short-term insomnia increase the risk of death by up to four times. The research was carried out in the US where the authors of the study estimate 320,000 to 507,000 of deaths last year may have been associated with sleeping pills.

THz Pulse technology brings new hope to cancer sufferers
A team of scientists from the University of Pécs who developed a method for producing ultra-short high-energy terahertz pulses, are now confident that they will be able to increase the electric field value of these pulses by a magnitude of 100. This development could lead to a variety of new and exciting applications, ranging from cancer therapy to semiconductor research. We spoke to János Hebling and József Fülöp to find out more

Drinking alcohol encouraged for heart attack survivors
Findings from the US Health Professionals Follow-up Study have shown that alcohol in moderation for survivors of a first heart attack lowers the risk of death from heart disease or any other cause. Men who drank two alcoholic drinks a day over a long period of time had a 14% lower risk of death from any cause and a 42% lower risk of death from cardiovascular disease than non-drinkers.
