Full-scale, fully functional test city
A new experimental ‘ghost’ town is due to be built in the USA in Lea County near Hobbs. The huge-scale science model is based on real-life town Rock Hill and will take up 15 square miles with buildings equipped with everyday appliances and fully supplied with plumbing and electricity, but containing no people.

Using holography to reduce aircraft costs
The increasing use of composites, sandwich and lightweight structures and parts in new airplanes means that testing techniques that do not compromise the integrity of these components are needed. Holograms and thermal imaging are often used in this way, but the FANTOM project led by coordinator Marc Georges has designed an ingenious way to combine these two methods

Plant extracts could fight obesity
Researchers have identified four plant extracts that could help in the fight against obesity. Two of the extracts inhibited the activity of the enzymes crucial for breaking down lipids, reducing the absorption of fat. The other extracts reduced the fat content in fat cells.
