Social networking on the move
The University of Lancaster has created a social network ‘app’ specifically aimed at travellers. The £1.6m project will allow road and rail users to share information about their journeys and update each other about delays. Known as – ‘Our Travel’, the app mixes a travel information system with social networking and direct information from transport workers. The aim is to reduce congestion and improve the transport system as users find more efficient ways to travel.

Autumn conkers to be rescued by smart phone app
Research teams and the Universities of Bristol and Hull have devised a mobile phone app allowing people to upload photos of horse chestnut leaves, with or without the indication of alien moths, pinpointing their location and helping to build up a nationwide picture of the widespread problem. The presence of these moths is threatening the future of one of the UK’s best-loved trees.
