Better use of health data will transform the healthcare landscape
A high-level group of experts today warned that Europeans will only be able to benefit from the affordable, less intrusive and more personalised healthcare which ICT can bring if agreement is reached on how to use health data. The group, headed by previous Projects contributor and President of Estonia, Toomas Hendrik Ilves, delivered this and other recommendations for redesigning health in Europe to Vice President Neelie Kroes and Commissioner John Dalli at eHealth Week 2012

Saving lives through better hospital communication
Poor communication between staff and departments in hospitals can put patient’s lives at risk, even lead to death. The HANDOVER Research Consortium is an EU-funded project looking at ways to improve patient care during time of transition as well as reducing avoidable and unnecessary treatment. We talk to the project’s principal investigator Paul Barach and other project partners about this important work that is saving lives

Drinking alcohol encouraged for heart attack survivors
Findings from the US Health Professionals Follow-up Study have shown that alcohol in moderation for survivors of a first heart attack lowers the risk of death from heart disease or any other cause. Men who drank two alcoholic drinks a day over a long period of time had a 14% lower risk of death from any cause and a 42% lower risk of death from cardiovascular disease than non-drinkers.
