Wanted: 270 researchers

The EU’s Joint Research Centre (JRC) has launched an invite to Europe’s scientific community to find 270 new members of staff. The JRC currently employs around 2,700 across Europe and looks to add an additional 10% to this figure.

In spite of the global recession, the EU continues to pump money into research and development. The JRC (a Directorate-general of the European Commission) is looking to employ a number of experienced researchers in a variety of fields in a number of European locations.

It is hoped that this wide-scale recruitment ‘competition’ with attract Europe’s top researchers in the fields of; chemistry, biology and health sciences, physics, structural mechanics, quantitative policy communication and information technology.

In order to apply, candidates must have the required university qualification, research experience (at least three years) and a satisfactory knowledge of English, French or German. Positions are available in Italy, Spain, Holland, Germany and Belgium.

Maire Geoghegan Quinn (Commissioner for Research, Innovation and Science) has supported the project saying “The JRC has a unique position at the centre of European science and of the EU policy making an exciting working environment for researchers. I welcome the launch of these competitions and I’m confident we will attract some of Europe’s best talents.” The JRC hopes the recruitment drive will help in the areas of;
• Towards an open and competitive economy
• Development of a low carbon society
• Sustainable management of natural resources
• Safety of food and consumer products
• Nuclear safety and security
• Security and crisis management
• Reference materials and measurements
