Use students' own mobile devices in universities, say researchers
New Euro-American research suggests that research institutions should make the most of the mobile devices and other technology that students already possess, rather than investing valuable resources in equipping them for research.
A research team from Gothenburg University, Sweden, lead by Johan Lundin, in collaboration with researchers from the University of California in San Diego, USA, propose that research institutions would benefit from allowing both educators and students to use their own laptops, mobile phones and user-generated web pages in class. The study aims to change the consensus amongst teachers that constant Internet access in class allows for inappropriate communication between students, suggesting that this interactive communication could actually be used for learning purposes instead. The team allowed a group of students to conduct fieldwork using their own mobile devices, and observed that the students made use of photographic and video mediums in their study, as well as communicating online to discuss their projects.
"On a general level the integration of technologies already appropriated by students supports the idea of connecting the world outside, with the activities within an educational institution," the researchers conclude.
