Temperature-powered damage-sensors to be built into aircraft skin
EADS Innovation Works are spearheading the development of aircraft skins with inbuilt sensors that can detect damage to the outer layer of the craft.
Powered by the temperature difference between the outside and inside of the fuselage, the state-of-the-art sensors will be able to detect any dents, cracks or other trauma on the outer layer of the craft’s skin; the kind of damage often caused by the plane colliding with birds in the air. If any damage is detected, the sensor will send message alerts via radio signal back to a central monitoring unit. The sensors are light and do not require any external power source, meaning that they can be built into the aircraft skin – often in normally inaccessible places – during the craft’s initial construction.
Developers hope that the technology could be implemented in many different applications, such as replacing currently heavy sensor systems in cars.
