Swedish researchers find way to block blood vessels feeding tumours
Researchers at the Karolinska Institutet have found a way of preventing blood vessel formation and therefore halting the growth of tumours in mice.
The researchers found that, by blocking ALK1, a receptor found on the surface of blood vessels, the process of angiogenesis – the development of new blood vessels to supply tumours with oxygen and nutrients – was inhibited.
The team were able to block ALK1 partly by genetic means and partly by using a pharmaceutical substance, RAP-041, which the researchers believe could be used in combination with existing angiogenesis inhibitors to achieve maximum effect. The discovery could signal the start of developing a way of preventing tumours from developing entirely.
Tests have now begun on the human equivalent of RAP-041, called ACE-041, with the aim of establishing which types of tumour are most responsive to the inhibiting of ALK1.
