Spanish engineers design 'harmless' underground system
Mathematicians from the Engineering and Architecture Schools of Seville University in Spain have developed a design for the planned second underground line in Seville, which will avoid potentially damaging historical buildings in the city.
The design uses a mathematical tool, incorporating polygons, to design a pattern in which equidistant routes are plotted between many points: in this case, the points are the many historical buildings in Seville. Previous experiences of constructing underground lines, both in Seville and in other cities, have shown that such development has the potential to structurally compromise old buildings. The new design by the University of Seville’s mathematicians promises to keep any line a safe distance, a radius of around eighty metres, from all the historical buildings concerned.
The new underground line will join Seville’s Palacio de Congresos (Conference Centre) with Santa Justa railway station, the historic centre and the district of Triana.
