Researchers react to UNESCO World Climate Report, agree to protect heritage sites
Researchers have agreed to develop preventative strategies to protect world heritage sites from the effects of climate change in light of the UNESCO World Climate Report.
The report claims that glaciers are melting and animals are moving from their usual habitats in response to climate change, and the focus now turns to whether preventative measures should be taken to protect world heritage sites, the relics of out shared cultural legacy. This, along with other issues, will be addressed by researchers in ‘Climate for Culture’, a recently launched, EU-funded project that will bring together sixteen countries from across Europe and Africa. The project intends to study a number of heritage sites around the world over the next five years to observe the effects on them, if any, of climate change.
Researchers will be using building and environment simulation software to imitate climate change effects on historic sites. Using the results, the project hopes to implement preventative and sustainable strategies to protect the sites, not only from climate change but also from the effects of tourism.
