PhDs under the hammer in funding cuts
The reduced budget for the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) means that there will be a 36% reduction in government funded science and engineering PhDs by 2013. The current figure of 10,900 funded places will be cut to just 7,000.
Professor David Delpy of the EPSRC explained that the council was back on the budget they had in 2004 when they funded only 6,700 students. Despite the ring-fencing of the science and technology budget for the next four years, other priorities mean that research is one of the areas to experience funding setbacks. To counter this new development, MPs are hoping to increase the number of PhDs funded by industry placements.
Universities minister David Willetts has laid out his scientific research priorities for the future: ageing, global warming and energy will take centre-stage. Despite the possibility of students taking their talent elsewhere under the new financial conditions, he stated that he hoped key research would remain in the UK, while calling attention to the benefits of a two-way flow of students for scientific research.
