New eco-concept living solution debuts at Swissbau Exhibition
An innovative new living solution has been unveiled at the Swissbau exhibition in Basel. The 'Self' is a novel living space that is self-sufficient in energy and water consumption.
The unit, which is 7.7 metres long and 3.2 metres high - roughly the size of a shipping container - includes a bedroom, bathroom, toilet and kitchen and can house two people. It exists independently of external water and energy supplies, and can be easily transported. It's size, ease of transport and self-sufficiency makes it ideal for temporary use; as a mobile research station, office for an event organiser, or as an advertising vehicle being just a few examples.
The 'Self' was conceived by two undergraduates, Bjoern Olsson and Sandro Macchi, and a prototype produced by the research institutions Empa and Eawag as well as other partner institutes, universities and companies. Water is harvested from collected rainwater and light soiled water, both of which are filtered to make them reusable. The surfaces, heating system, drainage and hygiene facilities also use as little energy as possible, making it a highly efficient living space.
Electricity is supplied by solar cells situated on the roof, whilst hydrogen is stored in metal hydride containers for use in heating and cooking if needed. Empa hopes to use the 'Self' as an actual guest house or research station once it has been used at trade fairs and shows.
