Global Alliance for Chronic Disease announce pact to fight most fatal diseases
The recently formed Global Alliance for Chronic Disease has outlined a landmark pact to fight the causes of some of the world’s worst known human diseases, including cancers, heart disease, strokes, diabetes and respiratory conditions.
The six existing members of the Alliance, consisting of health and research centres in the US, UK, Australia, China, India and Canada, welcomed new members from South Africa and Qatar as they highlighted the need for progression in the development of treatments for chronic non-communicable diseases (CNCDs). The action is prompted by the discovery that sixty per cent of deaths in 2006 were caused by CNCDs, twice that of many other diseases combined.
The proposed research will focus on middle and low income countries in particular, as the Alliance identified that the need to reduce tobacco consumption and indoor pollution-causing crude stoves is essential to combating CNCDs. New strategies will aim to build functioning programmes that can be successfully replicated, measuring clinical outcomes as well as involving and maintain local health services.
