Fraunhofer develop technique to trace harmful ultra-fine dust
Research scientists at the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT have developed a method of using gas streams and filters to separate different sizes of dust particles.
The debate over the repercussions of fine dust particle emissions is not a new one, but the particles have always been difficult to locate because of their miniscule size. The technique could be used to filter out harmful ultra-fine dusts produced by industrial plants. The research highlights the fact that the visible emissions from industrial plants are often not the most harmful, but rather the fine dust that can easily penetrate human skin. The new technique has been designed to be a fast, effective means by which to identify where these dusts are present and where they have come from.
Fraunhofer have suggested that the same technology can be used in association with the industrial plants themselves to try to prevent the harmful dusts from being emitted in the first place.
