EU leaders discuss Europe 2020 plan
The leaders of the European Union have met in Brussels to discuss the recently introduced 'Europe 2020' strategy, and have agreed to cooperate on economic policy as a means of increasing growth over the next decade.
The member states of the EU have all agreed on most elements of the proposed Europe 2020 plan, which aims to create better coordination of national and economic policy between the countries. This cooperation will be essential in helping the EU to recover from the financial crisis of the past year, and to confront challenges such as globalisation, climate change and an ageing population.
The meeting also set targets for increasing employment levels, meeting environmental commitments, and boosting spending on research and development. Unlike the previous ten-year strategy proposed by the EU, the targets of the Europe 2020 plan will be broken down into differentiated national targets, for which EU member governments have been asked to submit plans of action.
The EU leaders also discussed the current economic situation in Greece, where national debt is high. The situation has prompted the leaders to review the use of the Euro in not only Greece but other countries in the union.
