ERC Secretary General resigns
It has been confirmed today that Professor Andreu Mas-Colell has stepped down as Secretary General of the European Research Council. Mas-Colell is the second high profile figure to leave their post at the ERC this year alongside the former President Fotis Kafatos.
Professor Mas-Colell was elected as Secretary General of the ERC on 1st July 2009 and his resignation took effect 1st September 2010. His post as Secretary General was intended to last two and a half years, however lasted just 14 months. Mas Colell thanked the ERC for the experience and praised the institution on his parting; “I’m most grateful to the Scientific Council of the ERC and the European Commission for the opportunity to become intensely involved in two of the causes I’m passionate about: Science and Europe. Doing so from the vantage point of the ERC, an institution which is bound to have a remarkable impact on the structure and competitiveness of European science has indeed been a priviledge.”
Praise was also forthcoming for Mas-Colell from both the EC and the ERC. Maire Geoghegan-Quinn, EC Commissioner (for Research, Innovation and Science) stated; “Professor Mas-Colell’s contribution to the ERC has been most valuable and I should like to thank him warmly for his commitment to this new organisation set up by the Commission to further frontier research.” And the new President of the ERC, Helga Nowotny thanked him “warmly for his excellent contribution. The ERC has profited from his knowledge and rich experience.”
Mas-Colell is due to continue his post at the Univeritat Pompeu Fabru in Barcelona as a Professor of Economics. His career in academia has been very distinguished and celebrated, he has written over 100 research papers, worked at some of the worlds leading institutions and served as President of the European Economic Association.
Mas-Colell’s replacement has not yet been announced, but the President of the ERC, Helga Nowotny has described Mas-Colell\'s departure as “a great loss”.
