eHealth grid solutions presented at EGEE forum in Sweden
The recently hosted Enabling Grids for E-Science (EGEE) forum in Uppsala, Sweden, was a chance for several European grid computing projects to explain how they can help the development of eHealth accessibility in Europe.
The HeMoLab, EELA-2 and Sentinel projects are all developing ways to improve the functionality and widen the use of computing grids in Europe, in that hope that collaboration between researchers and medical professionals can help to cure some of the world’s most deadly diseases.
The HeMoLab project aims to develop models, techniques and tools for simulating the human cardiovascular system in order to encourage a greater understanding of how the system works. The EELA-2 project has developed infrastructures to allow grid computer networks to operate effectively and with greater power, whilst the France-based Sentinel project unites many areas of cancer research – including screening structures, medical laboratories and public health authorities – to enable secure medical data exchange between cancer screening organisations and cancer analysis laboratories.
The hope is that all three projects will develop new ways to use grid technologies in the medical and biomedical sectors, particularly when diseases such as cancer are involved. The EGEE, which has been running for the past six years, provides a platform for the medical profession to see how grid computer systems can benefit both medical treatment and research.
