COP15: EU and Japan unhappy with US's stubborn attitude to climate change
Bloomberg reports that the US still shows signs it may be unwilling to improve its reduction targets and promise money to help developing countries fight climate change, at the UN climate summit in Copenhagen.
Although a short-term plan is on the way to being agreed upon, it is the long-term proposals that are causing problems. Alden Meyer, director of policy at the US-based Union of Concerned Scientists, explains the issue: "The problem is, I don't think the European Union and Japan will agree on a combined number that assumes the US is doing its share without the US being clear it can do its share."
The hope is that the US will sign a combined financial goal for the industrialized world to finance the developing world. America has already faced criticism from China – currently the biggest polluter, followed by the US – for not having tough enough reduction targets.
